Petersen: Nebraska’s Voter ID Law Falls Short of Restoring Full Confidence

LINCOLN, NE — Scott Petersen, candidate for Nebraska Secretary of State, issued the following statement regarding Nebraska’s voter ID law and its impact on election confidence:
“Nebraska’s voter ID law was presented as a major step toward securing our elections. But Nebraskans deserve to understand a simple truth: voter ID alone is not a complete solution.
The current law verifies identity at the polls but it does not address the broader question of eligibility within the system itself.
That distinction matters.

The IDs accepted under Nebraska law are widely used for many purposes beyond voting. They confirm who someone is, not whether every record in the system is accurate or up to date.
At the same time, voter registration relies on the honor system, meaning the strength of the system depends heavily on accurate records and consistent verification processes behind the scenes.
If we are serious about restoring confidence in our elections, we must look at the entire system from registration to voter rolls to verification and not just one step in the process.

Nebraskans deserve transparency, accountability, and systems that are built to be trusted from start to finish, not policies that create a false sense of security.
I’m running to restore that confidence by strengthening transparency, ensuring accountability, and making sure our election systems work the way they should for the people of Nebraska.”
