OMAHA, NE — Scott Petersen, Republican candidate for Nebraska Secretary of State, issued the following statement in response to the Nebraska Supreme Court’s recent ruling regarding ballot access in the 2026 U.S. Senate race:
“The Nebraska Supreme Court’s ruling makes one thing clear: the Secretary of State’s office must operate with precision, discipline, and respect for the law.
This decision highlights what happens when that focus is lost. Election administration isn’t about messaging. It’s about getting it right, every time.
When decisions about ballot access are made too late, or without clear adherence to process, it creates confusion, invites legal challenges, and ultimately undermines confidence in our election system.
This office is not about making headlines or political statements. It is about administering the law correctly, consistently, and on time.
Nebraskans deserve an election system that is secure, transparent, and professionally managed from start to finish.
That’s exactly why I’m running for Secretary of State.
We need leadership that focuses on getting the details right, following the law, and ensuring every election is conducted with clarity and accountability.
Because in the end, trust in our elections doesn’t come from rhetoric. It comes from doing the job right.”
Petersen said the ruling underscores the importance of competent, process-driven leadership in the Secretary of State’s office and reinforces the need to restore confidence in Nebraska’s election system.
